It struck me as audacious, unrestrained, and cleverly flamboyant in ways that are downright odd in today's cinematic universe. I have admired Gerwig's work ever since she was in Baghead (2008). She appeared to reach a French New Wave-inflected high point with her work in Frances Ha (2012), which I just rewatched recently. Gerwig starred in White Noise (2022), which was alright, but Barbie is comparatively fearless. Depression Barbie! I'll add more thoughts later. about Ken's discovery of the patriarchy, the movie's ironic mansplaining of The Godfather (1972), also allusions to 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), Singin' in the Rain (1952), and The Wizard of Oz (1939). For now, here's Gerwig explaining many of the cinematic influences that she incorporated into the movie:

Here is America Ferrera's key monologue from later in the movie:

"It is literally impossible to be a woman. You are so beautiful, and so smart, and it kills me that you don't think you're good enough. Like, we have to always be extraordinary, but somehow we're always doing it wrong.

You have to be thin, but not too thin. And you can never say you want to be thin. You have to say you want to be healthy, but also you have to be thin. You have to have money, but you can't ask for money because that's crass. You have to be a boss, but you can't be mean. You have to lead, but you can't squash other people's ideas. You're supposed to love being a mother, but don't talk about your kids all the damn time. You have to be a career woman but also always be looking out for other people. You have to answer for men's bad behavior, which is insane, but if you point that out, you're accused of complaining. You're supposed to stay pretty for men, but not so pretty that you tempt them too much or that you threaten other women because you're supposed to be a part of the sisterhood.

But always stand out and always be grateful. But never forget that the system is rigged. So find a way to acknowledge that but also always be grateful. You have to never get old, never be rude, never show off, never be selfish, never fall down, never fail, never show fear, never get out of line.

It's too hard! It's too contradictory and nobody gives you a medal or says thank you! And it turns out in fact that not only are you doing everything wrong, but also everything is your fault.

I'm just so tired of watching myself and every single other woman tie herself into knots so that people will like us. The movie distinctively lacks dramatic focus. It resembles some sort of amusement park ride where some critter snarls or clicks menacingly as Bryce Dallas Howard hides underwater. Chris Pratt could only summon a look of mild concern for much of the movie as Sam Neill proved far more expressive (with his Australian squinting and double takes) than most anyone else.

<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "Times New Roman", Times, serif; font-size: 18.6667px;">If I were a dinosaur, I would sue Universal Studios for mucking up the species' image. Fearsome, they are not. The giganotosaurus arrives to pose snarling along with the t-rex in the jungle as the Mark Zuckerberg-esque villain of Biosyn (Campbell Scott) gets attacked by yet more critters in a subway car.

<i style="background-color: white; font-family: "Times New Roman", Times, serif; font-size: 18.6667px;">Jaws <span style="background-color: white; font-family: "Times New Roman", Times, serif; font-size: 18.6667px;">(1975) worked much better because you couldn't see the shark for much of the movie, and there's only one of them, thus the movie has suspense that creates genuine fear. <i style="background-color: white; font-family: "Times New Roman", Times, serif; font-size: 18.6667px;">Jurassic World: Dominion <span style="background-color: white; font-family: "Times New Roman", Times, serif; font-size: 18.6667px;">reassembles the leads of 5 other movies to appear semi-scared when they look up as they cower under an overturned jeep. Aaroarrrr! 5 notes on Robert Eggers' The Northman

1) Yowsah! The Northman is so manly, I went home, put on a hair shirt, and then ran into the woods where I dwell to this day, roaring by the bonfire with my fellow smelly bearded roughnecks, barking, lapping mystical potion up from a doggie bowl, gesturing around with my spear, grunting, rooting in the weeds, howling, burping, swearing revenge, screaming at the camera, reading Iron John: A Book About Men by Robert Bly, contracting poison ivy rashes, etc. No more civilized comforts for me! No more irony, just the reek of male sweat and the dark woods cinematically lit with torchlight. Soon, we will have visions!
2) Anya Taylor-Joy appears as an oddly refined and blonde sorceress named Olga. I can't help but think that it should be a mandatory part of her contract with any film or TV production that she play some chess somewhere, even if only for a scene or two. As we learned from The Queen's Gambit, she's very good at winning high level chess tournaments in places like Russia.

3) It's a shame that Amleth (Alexander Skarsgard) couldn't take up bird watching or flower arranging or mindful breathing exercises in those occasional interludes between Viking boat trips through rainstorms or raging midnight slaughters as a blood-soaked berserker in the land of Rus. Why couldn't Amleth collect pretty pebbles along the unruly Hrafsney shoreline? Is it really necessary for the intensity of all of Amleth's scenes to be turned all the way up to 11? Perhaps Amleth could have played chess with Olga during their occasional breaks from being slaves for Fjolnir?

4) If we've learned anything from his previous movies The Witch (2015) and The Lighthouse (2019), Robert Eggers thoroughly researched the world of Vikings of AD 895.

5) What does one learn from The Northman? After killing a relative of the king, keep the poor sod's heart in your back pocket. It may come in handy later. Also, cultivate flocks of ravens. They can be helpful if they like you.

1) I waited a long time to see The French Dispatch on a smaller screen in the local Regal cineplex. I pre-read and enjoyed the accompanying book of New Yorker essays entitled An Editor's Burial assembled by Wes Anderson. I thought the movie would never arrive at my small town in South Carolina, but it did . . . and I went away feeling a bit let down. Next to Greta Gerwig and Sofia Coppola, Wes Anderson is one of my favorite of the younger directors out there, and I teach Rushmore (1998) regularly, but The French Dispatch is so constrained, the mise en scene so boxed in, every frame within a frame within a frame, the storylines are so short that they leave only the tiniest suggestion of any character arcs for any of the many excellent actors. I hear they all have great dinners after a day's shoot, but Bill Murray only has time to look slightly wistful as the main editor Arthur Howitzer, Jr. Timothee Chalamet looks intense with playfully revolutionary hair. Tilda Swinton comically provides the viewer with a slide show, and Frances McDormand plays Lucinda Krementz who appears as a bemused reporter. The movie is mostly breathtaking for the way it squanders major stars with so little screen time: Saoirse Ronan (as Junkie Showgirl # 1) gets one brief close up of her blue eyes through a grate. Every shot is oh so crafted, appreciating the film requires a kind of archeological dig into the analysis of each frozen frame. I wish that Anderson would just loosen up a bit, and give his talented actors more time to breathe and exist on screen as he used to do. His OCD filmmaking resembles a salad so chopped up and Cuisinarted, one is left doing what one can to appreciate the occasional artfully sculpted fragment of a carrot.

2) All that said, I did like Benicio del Toro's droll interpretation of the tortured artist Moses Rosenthaler. Anderson appears to take pleasure in puncturing the pretensions of the art world, and del Toro's dry delivery accentuates that. The French Dispatch can be surprisingly funny.

The Film Doctor http://www.blogger.com/profile/03073505923746994988noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7704583061723470804.post-92209555208185089532021-11-19T17:49:00.004-05:002021-11-19T17:49:42.776-05:00Don't Look Up trailer

The Film Doctor http://www.blogger.com/profile/03073505923746994988noreply@blogger.com0
